Understanding the Different Types of Service Providers and How it Impacts Cost

There are three main types of companies that deal with bed bugs.

  1.  The first one (like us) is a bed bug specialist. This consists of a licensed exterminator that offers all forms of effective bed bug treatments (Chemical, Organic, Heat and K9 Inspections).
  2. The second is a heat treatment company. These companies are NOT required to be licensed to operate.
  3. The third is a general pest control company that handles ALL types of pests, and may offer bed bug treatments.

While we of course recommend going with a licensed expert, the alternatives are available and it’s important to have a thorough understanding.

Generally, heat treatment companies tend to be very costly and require an extensive amount of extra preparation. They also often require a lot of items to be thrown away. A heat treatment company may charge $3000-$6000 for a single heat treatment of a home. This is in addition to costs for replacing items they have you throw away. This is thousands of dollars more than a treatment process that we offer!  Learn more about our affordable heat treatment options here.

A general pest control company may be able to effectively get rid of bed bugs, but they may charge for spot treatments, and overall may be ineffective due to lack of experience.  You are also paying for large overhead that is completely unrelated to bed bugs.

Our Bed bug treatment cost is based on a few factors

1. The size of your home and number of bedrooms

The size of the area to be treated, usually the size of your home, is going to almost always factor into the cost of a bed bug treatment. Here is the catch, some companies offer to treat only one room, or one piece of furniture. This translates to a cheaper price at first, but it will cost you in the long run.

Bed bugs can and will make there way throughout your entire home. Especially if you have done spot treatments! They will travel to find a food source, and they can be transported by your clothing and movement throughout your house. Spot treating certain rooms is just simply not effective.

The Size of Your Home

The square footage size of your home.

The Number of Bedrooms

The number of bedrooms actively used as bedrooms.

Living Spaces + Extras

Additional areas such as extra family rooms, basements, finished garages, bonus rooms, etc.

Look for a bed bug exterminator that treats your WHOLE house. It may cost more up front, but you won’t have to pay over and over as bed bugs inevitably show up in other areas of your home.

The size of your home and how bad the bed bug problem is will always factor into the price you pay. Generally, a larger home will cost more than a smaller home. There are many factors that go into this, but the service provider you speak with should be able to thoroughly explain every aspect to you.

2. The Severity of the Infestation

The severity of the infestation and how many bed bugs there are, will also factor in. In severe infestations we may recommend heat treating a single room or steam treating certain furniture, and/or may recommend additional treatment appointments to ensure success.

The degree of the infestation will determine the best / recommended type of treatment. A full service bed bug company will provide an array of treatment options. The best option depending on the severity of the problem, will be selected for your unique situation.

Some bed bug companies are limited to what they can offer, and this can have a huge impact on bed bug treatment cost. For example, companies that are NOT licensed exterminators can offer heat only. These heaters are expensive, and your quote will show that! They are limited to what they can offer, regardless of how bad (or not bad) your problem is. Further, heat without chemical is not foolproof!

Bed bug treatment costs

Companies that are exterminators that do NOT specialize in bed bugs are going to have overhead and will pass that cost on to you. The “big box” companies are spending big money on marketing and overhead, and someone has to pay for that! These companies often will also only offer traditional chemical pest control that is not bed bug specific.
You’re making calls for say a regular, 3 bedroom home. One company says $1,000. Another company says $5,000. And then a third company says $500. It’s important to do an equal comparison of services provided for the price charged.

3. The Type of Company and Treatment Process

In addition to the considerations above about the TYPE of company, the WAY the company treats matters.

As mentioned, heat treatments are typically advertised as one and done, but can be ineffective and very costly.

However, if you get a low price for another company, you should also be just as concerned.

Generally a cheap treatment process consists of either A. Spot Treating or B. One single treatment.

In order for bed bug treatment to be effective, it requires multiple visits and knowledge of bed bugs. If you are comparing pricing, make sure it’s an apples to apples comparison!  The number of visits and value included, the treatment areas (it should be your entire home) and the types of treatments being completed (types of chemicals / treatments) should be comparable. If you get a quote for $500 per appointment but they have to come back 4 times and you’re now paying $2K, you’ve greatly increased the cost of treatment.

Full Home Vs. Spot Treatments

Bed bugs require your entire home to be treated. Spot treatments are ineffective.

A bed bug specialist offers all effective treatment methods.

Overall Process and Guarantee

The treatment process should be backed by a guarantee that starts the day you are finished.

K9 Inspection to Confirm Success

The Treatment Process

Just like the types of treatments can vary, the way these treatment processes work can vary from company to company as well. Having an affordable, comprehensive treatment process is key. Again, you don’t want to keep paying a provider to come back over and over, and having a menu of items is essential to making sure a bed bug problem is successfully resolved.

We are appropriately licensed and insured in the state of Ohio, and offer full service bed bug extermination. We are also bed bug specific, so we’re not passing along expensive general pest control overhead to you. This means we are able to provide the most cost effective and most efficient treatment methods!

We treat your entire home, and provide a wealth of information to prepare for the treatment process, as well as protocols to follow throughout.

Ensuring Affordable Bed Bug Treatment

The bottom line is it is important to do your research! Check out bed bug exterminator reviews, learn about what the company offers and make a decision that fits your unique situation and budget. Certain sales tactics can backfire and actually make the problem worse. Lastly, putting profits over good business is a recipe for disaster. Get a free inspection and evaluation and find a trusted service provider in your area!

Before you hire a bed bug exterminator, give us a call! Let’s talk about your unique situation and discuss treatment options.

Here are a few tips before you hire a bed bug contractor (or any contractor, really):

Tip 1: Get more than one quote! Make sure you compare 2-3 estimates, compare what they include and make sure you are getting the most value for your money.

Tip 2: Research the company you are going to hire. Read reviews, make sure the price you are being quoted is fair and reasonable for the project being done.

Tip 3: Hire a company that offers more than one treatment method. In bed bug world, this is critical. Companies that are limited to heat often charge more because that is the only tool in their toolbox. Heat is rarely necessary, but always more expensive.

Tip 4: Make sure whoever you hire can confirm the treatment was successful. If you are hiring a plumber, you are going to test the faucet for a leak before he leaves. If you hire a bed bug exterminator that doesn’t do a K9 completion inspection, how do you know it worked?

This can be a stressful, overwhelming situation with emotions running high. However it is very important to understand your options before you select a service provider.

Bed bug treatment does not have to break the bank. While it may be an unforeseen emergency expense, most situations can be managed and successfully handled for an affordable price tag. In some severe situations we can see the expense rise, but for the average customer, treatment is affordable and reasonable. Not a joy to do, but attainable and necessary to prevent the issue from worsening. We also offer a convenient payment plan as well as a third party 0% interest payment option.

A Cautionary Tale

We’ve been in the bed bug business awhile now, and we’ve heard some doozies, but this one still takes the cake. If we can help one family by sharing this customer story, then it’s worth it.

We were contacted by a customer who had been previously treated by another company, a year prior. Fast forward to present day, they have bed bugs (still? again?), and they know they have to deal with it quickly.

Upon exploring their situation further, they are following all precautions and preventative measures, they are vigilant! Come to find out, their vigilance is because their last treatment cost them in excess of $12,000. No, that is not a typo!
The treatment they had done by their previous exterminator was priced at $6,000 for heat only, and they were told to throw all furniture away. So combining the actual treatment price tag with the cost of replacing all their beds, couches, chairs, etc – Left them with over $12,000 in expenses related to what they described as a pretty minor bed bug problem. There was no inspection done after their treatment, so not only do they have to treat again, they don’t know if that $12,000 price tag actually resolved the issue in the first place.

Expensive Treatment Process

Be wary of extremely high costs and pushy sales tactics or aggressive "financing" options.

Extensive Furniture Required to be Removed

Seek a second opinion before discarding ANY personal belongings or furniture.

No Verification of Success

Always select a service provider that can verify the treatment was successful.

No Guarantee

Opt for a treatment process that is backed by a guarantee!

Now there are a few things “wrong” with this;

  • Heat treatments should only be used in very severe situations. This was not the case.
  • Heat treatments and most all treatments do NOT require furniture to be thrown away.
  • Treatment must be followed up by a canine inspection to ensure it was effective.
  • No bed bug treatment on any home should cost a family $12,000, period. This is predatory sales!

Just to put this in perspective for you, our chemical treatment costs rarely exceed $1,200 for a typical family home, with a minor to moderate bed bug issue. We are a full service company, so we offer all effective treatment methods. We also follow up ALL treatments with a canine inspection to ensure 100% effectiveness.
UPDATE: Levy the dog successfully cleared this house following their treatment process. “You have been a pleasure to work with in every aspect. When we had a question, you responded immediately. We wish we would have found you in the first place. Thank you”.
