Let’s explore the three truths and a lie – And the three reasons why bed bug free in one day is an impossible promise.
Why Do Companies Promise Bed Bug Free in One Day?
In most scenarios, this is going to reference heat treatments. The promise implies that you will be bed bug free in one day following a heat treatment. The process can vary by company, but this is an attractive promise for those dealing with a bed bug issue! Unfortunately it’s a deceiving statement.
Reason Number 1: Preparation
Preperation for a heat treatment is an involved process. If your heat treatment company is promising a same day / bed bug free in one day promise without preparation, RUN!
For most households, the preparation alone takes more than a day. In order for your entire home to be safely heated to the necessary temperature (over 120 degrees), you must prep your house ahead of time.
This can include removing anything combustible or flammable, like hairspray or aerosol cans. Also anything that will melt or get damaged by the high heat, such as make up, paintings, etc. You also have to be mindful of fire suppression systems in apartments and condos.
It will also include decluttering and ensuring the heat can penetrate every single place that a bed bug could be hiding. Many heat treatment companies require you to throw away your belongings which simply is not necessary in the majority of bed bug situations.
Reason Number 2: Bed Bugs Beat the Heat
The number one thing missing from a “bed bug free in one day” promise is the truth about heat treatments. Bed bugs can survive a heat treatment, period.
Bugs can hide and find microclimates and then survive to re-infest your home. Every heat treatment, even a whole house heat treatment, needs to be followed up with chemical or biological applications.
Further, unless your heat treatment company is bringing a certified bed bug dog in to inspect and clear the property, this is an empty promise all around.
Reason Number 3: It’s a Process without Shortcuts
Successful treatment for bed bugs is a process. Whether you are using heat or traditional extermination methods, you must prepare for a bed bug treatment and understand that bed bugs will not be gone overnight. This is a process, and there is no single product that kills ALL bed bugs in your home instantly.
